Passion For Poetry

Today I thought I'd try something a little different. As I'm sure I mentioned before, I belong to a poetry group called the Cobourg Poetry Workshop. As well as hosting local poetry readings twice a month (in two different venues) we also meet once a month to share poetry amongst ourselves. During these meetings we're assigned "poemwork" which is basically a poetry prompt that we can choose to do, or not to do, for the next meeting. Today I'm going to share a couple of my poemwork poems.

Poemwork: Write a poem that is a conversation.

Conversation With Myself

You sit there
and play solitaire
for hours on end.
Some kind of writer
you are

That's not true.
Go away.

You're right
sometimes
you play Hearts
instead.

I'm not listening to you

And then, feeling guilty
you'll turn back to your writing
and just as you're about
to type the first word
you find a different
game to play.

I don't have to justify
myself to you

Then answer me this.
How many games
of solitaire
did it take to create
this poem?

Poemwork: Make a poem out of a collection of dictionary definitions.
My Sources:
Merriam-Webster On-line dictionary
Family Word Finder – Reader’s Digest Books, 1976
Words: (chosen at random) underworld, creation, provident, fanatic, skeptic, heaven, hell

creation and creator

in the nether realm of the devil and the demons
lies the place of departed souls
a social sphere below the level of ordinary life
a place or state of misery, torment, or wickedness

it lies on the side of the earth opposite to this one
the nether world in which the dead continue to exist
the damned suffer everlasting punishment
in these regions of Hell

the Norse goddess of death
is bringing the world into ordered existence
the Deity’s all-foreseeing care over the cosmos
has her acting without a prearranged script or plan

other goddesses, whose worship involved frenzy
descend in one way or another
not seeing beforehand
the act of creating, the act of making

a person disposed to skepticism
can make ready for the future
but absolute knowledge is unattainable
and judgements must be continually questioned

with God, sin is absent over the earth
there is a spiritual state of everlasting communion
in the arch of the sky, the dwelling place of the Deity
the world under Heaven is a condition of utmost happiness

Poemwork: Create a sound poem

Rain Storm

pit pat, drip, pause
Bodhran heartbeat
drip, pit pat, drip, pause
Snare drum buzz
drip, drip, pitter patter
Bass drum rumbling
pitter patter pitter patter
Kettle drum growling
pitterpatterpitterpatterpitterpatter
Bright white cymbal clashing
Tympani in surround sound
pitterpatterpitterpatterpitterpatter
Kettle drum growling
pitter patter pitter patter
Bass drum rumbling
drip, drip, pitter patter
Snare drum buzz
drip, pit pat, drip, pause
Bodhran heartbeat
pit pat, drip, pause
