Pregnant

oneword

Today's word: pregnant

The sky is pregnant with possibilities. It's not so much overcast as just dim. The wind is hushed with expectation. Will it rain? Will the sun come out? This time of year it's really hard to tell just what it will do out there. One never knows.

Write Every Day

Today's prompt: Her breath caught in her throat. As she walked into the room she saw him, her ex-boyfriend of at least five years, sitting on her living room sofa. She thought she had changed locks since then.

She stood silently, trying to understand what he was doing there. He looked right at home, like he'd never left, like he belonged. Her heart, at least what he'd left of it, gave a lurch.

"You have 10 seconds to leave before I call the police."

"I told you I'd be back."

He didn't even raise his head from where he was resting it on the back of the sofa. The dim light cast mysterious shadows over his face. He looked thinner, tired.

"And I told you not to bother."

She dropped her purse on the table by the door and kicked off her shoes, unwilling to let him see how much his presence unnerved her. Unwilling to let him see how much she still wanted him. She picked up her cell phone.

"You have five seconds."

"You're not going to call the cops on me." His voice was self-assured, arrogant even.

"And what makes you think you're still welcome here?"

He turned to look at her finally, cobalt eyes burning with intensity. Her heart stuttered in her chest. He was so beautiful she couldn't stand it.
